The Times Online reports that the BBC will downsize its website, close two radio stations, and shrink spending on imported American programming, all in an effort to balance its bottom line and offer its commercial rivals a level playing field. For the BBC, being too big and living beyond its means of a guaranteed £3.6 billion annual license fee, are hardly problems. PBS wishes it had such problems. Instead, PBS prefers to struggle with being too small, woefully underfunded, and practically irrelevant. Now those are real problems, and the status quo is no solution.
